Apartment Fire Prevention Tips

by admin on April 7, 2011

Apartments grant a great amount of personal freedom, and there are few things as exciting as moving into a new place. As head-spinning as a new move might be, it’s still important to remember that a few simple safety steps can go a long way towards preventing a serious situation down the road.

Fire remains one of the most serious threats an apartment community can face. By taking a few preventative measures, you can help ensure peace of mind for both you and your neighbors. Be sure and inspect the outlets in your new apartment – do they appear sound? Be careful not to overload them with a billion power strips and plugs either!

Lamps are often a fire hazard, so double check that you have the correct wattage bulb in the socket of each and every one on your new home. Also be sure to clear overhanging cloth such as wall tapestries, scarves, etc. that could possible drape the lamp accidentally.

Space heaters can be a great way to keep your heating costs down in the winter, but be careful not to accidentally leave them running when you head out the door. Many newer models offer timer features (complete with auto shutoff), so that might be something worth looking in to.

Finally, be sure you have plenty of fresh batteries in the smoke detector, and having a few fire extinguishers placed around the apartment is always a safe bet. And NEVER smoke in bed! Better yet, make a habit of smoking outside your apartment all together if you can help it – you’ll not only have peace of mind but a nicer smelling home as well!
